(3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) Also known as ecstasy, molly or mandy, MDMA is a synthetic psychoactive empathogen, which increases an individual’s feeling of empathy and kindness, as well as the feeling of being socially accepted by and connected to others.
In MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, patients consent to 2 or 3 multi-hour sessions of therapy with a team of psychiatrists. In this setting, MDMA is utilized as an entactogenic tool to allow the therapists to probe one’s underlying trauma without causing emotional distress.
